Christopher O’Connor was born in Ireland where he developed a passion and talent for painting at a young age. He spent the first two decades of his life in the quiet, pastoral village of Dingle in County Kerry developing his skills as a painter. Always wanting to explore the world, in his 20s he had the opportunity to travel to America and Europe extensively. During these travels and over the course of the next 15 years, Christopher refined his talent and technique. It was in the verdant hillsides of Killarney, Ireland where Christopher was able to find the solitude to focus on creating his versatile technique as a painter. Well versed in pointillist, expressionist and fauvist applications of paint, Christopher has a unique dexterity as a painter. He brings a contemporary lense to these classical approaches in his scale, format and composition. Christopher moved to Portland in 2012 where he fell in love with the contrast of jagged granite and aquamarine that adorns the coastline of Maine. He has taken great inspiration from the land that moved the brushes and hearts of Homer and the Wyeths before him. In his ‘Coastal’ series, Christopher explores the Maine shoreline within the confines of small and large square canvases. Always curious to explore new subject matter, Christopher has also been working as of late with a series of paintings he calls ‘Artifacts’. This series approaches the everyday object with a sense of wonder. The ‘Artifacts’ can be hung as a single painting or as part of a larger grid, creating a singular piece out of many. Christopher’s work can be found in private collections in Ireland, France, California, New York, Maine and Florida. In Maine, Christopher is represented by Maine Farmland Trust Gallery (in Belfast) and by Artemis Gallery (in Northeast Harbor).
